Bright Colors

Boots: Chinese Laundry, Tights, Skirt, Jacket: Target, Sweater: Victoria Secret, Scarf: Avatar (via Just Creations)

So I’m still playing along with the Freckles in April outfit prompts. Sometimes it’s nice to have someone else tell you what to wear :)

Today the prompt was bright colors, which felt a little bit like cheating for me because that’s like telling me to breath oxygen, or eat to much chocolate, or watch six episodes of Cake Boss back to back. I don’t need telling, these are just things that I DO. Still I copped out yesterday and wore something I’ve worn a squillion times before but I’m pretty sure I’ve never blogged it. So it still counts right? I’m also rocking a new hair cut, so I feel like I can go back a couple weeks, post the same outfit, and call it ‘new’ because new hair basically makes it a whole new outfit right?

Also thanks everyone for being so nice about the hair. My brain tells me that I will look ‘better’ with longer hair because I am a girl and that I should grow it out, but my heart knows I’m meant for a pixie cut. Which is why I keep hacking it all off. Even when I have different hair I still ‘picture’ myself with shorter hair. Is that weird?

Anyone else out there thinking about Valentine’s day plans? I’m not much of a romantic, but I think we are going to try something fun this year involving blanket forts (thanks for that inspiration Emma), maybe some Bollywood films (Ki was talking about them a little while ago, I LOVE me some Bollywood films but Curly-haired0-boy has never really watched any), maybe some easy homemade art I can hang on the walls, and definitely some heart garlands. And something for dinner. What is delicious simple Valentines food? I can make a mean curry but that is basically my only cooking skill. Yummy, but hardly ‘romantic’.

Grunge Rock

Pants: Old Bleached Gap Jeans, Etsy Boots, Gap tank-tops, Old Navy jacket, Various necklaces, Handmade earrings, Black fishnet-shirt I’ve had since I was 13 and pretending to be a totally rad punk rocker.

That’s six grungy photos and one silly one to grow on.

I’m not the type of girl to idealize older decades. I enjoy modern medicine, women’s rights, and indoor plumbing way to much to wish I lived in the past. But I do love the fashion of previous eras, one of my favorite looks is the grunge rock. Does anyone out there read graphic novels? Go pick up Maggie the Mechanic, it’s the first in the Love & Rockets series by the Hernandez Brothers. They are more Punk Rock but the ideals speak to me in the same way. I think I would have been pretty awesome in the 80′s I can totally pull off ‘cute & tough’. So I wanted to try this look. I’m not sure the grunge or the punk rockers would hang with me but I think the inspiration is apparent.

P.S. New Hair cut! I went a lot shorter, and am very happy with it.

Learning to Pattern Mix

Shoes, Socks, Leggings, Jacket: Target, Shirt: NY&C, Skirt: Express, Hat: Just Creations

The last ‘winter prompt’ from Freckles in April this week was Pattern Mixing.

This was hard for me because although I’m in no way against pattern mixing, or scared of it. I simply do not own very many patterned items. A couple dresses, a couple tanks tops, and well this skirt. I have lots of solid colored items that even manage to be almost exactly the same color. So here is Loren… pattern mixing. The shirt has pin stripes, the skirt has horizontal stripes, and the socks have some kind of pattern on them.

And I must have had a small brain aneurism the other day, because after overspending on cute dresses during the Modcloth sale, I spent a lot of money on cute dresses from a Dorthy Perkins sale. And you guys, some of them are PATTERNED.  I have a little bonus/raise coming in at work so I can afford the things I ordered. But I was feeling guilty because I just don’t need them.

Then I remembered the immortal words of Tom Haverford.

P.S. I got these cute little oxfords off the clearance rack at Target for $6… W00t!

Channeling My Girl Crush

Shirt, Tights, Socks: Target, Boots: Etsy, Skirt: Modcloth
Monkey Painting: My neighbors trash

I saw this skirt on Modcloth when I was shopping during one of their sales this winter. I was like ‘Ooooo I love that! The colors are great and it reminds me of that skirt that Virginie has!’ So I added it to my cart (even though it wasn’t on sale, the horrors!!!!) And sometime after it was ordered but before it got to my house she wore it again. And I realized it was the EXACT same skirt. In case anyone doesn’t know I have a huge girl crush on Virginie but ordering the same clothes takes it to a whole new level. It’s about to get all Single White Female up in here.

So as an Ode to Virginie, and because I’ve been participating in the Freckles in April winter prompts I decided to try & channel Virginie. Who always seems to pull together the cutest elegant outfits and isn’t one of those bloggers who seems to have an infinitely large closet. Also she is making a movie, which is awesome. So Virginie, while I may have some of the same clothing as you, occasionally try to dress like you, I pinky promise not to get your hair cut and then try to murder you.

It was raining, and dark, and I forgot my tripod… SO indoor shots. They ended up better than I expected (although still not great) and Ian-dog insisted on being in the pictures.

Lacy Red Goodness

Dress & Jacket: Thrifted, Tights: Target, Shoes: Tsubo, Necklace: Homemade

Look out ladies! I’ve come down with a serious case of ‘sexy legs’.

I used to do the layered tights thing pretty regularly but I’ve never pulled off the look at work. I’ve been leaning more towards ‘high contrast’ outfits lately. I think this is one of my favorite ensembles lately.

I spent the afternoon with a friend at her co-worker’s home for some ‘lady time’. It was a lot of fun, the company was good, the food was good, but my introverted nature pushed through a little because once I got home I was exhausted. Not tired, just worn out. I can only handle a certain amount of social interaction at a time, I’d never really met these ladies before and while meeting new people is definitely POSITIVE social interaction it still feels really draining. Especially after a full day at work.

Still I am glad I went. It did make me feel like I need to be moving in a slightly different direction professionally. I think I’d like to take on more web design/development freelance projects. It’s a field that helps fulfill my creative side and my more analytical nature. (You guys, I REALLY like writing code, it’s like making up a puzzle in your head and then getting to solve it yourself. I like puzzles.) I need to finish up my portfolio website first, but I’d really like a few more pieces to put in it. Which means I might be looking for some blogs that would like to update their layouts for very very cheap (read free). Hint, hint. It’s definitely a limited time/ limited quantity offer but please feel free to give me a shout out if you think you’ll be interested in working with me on updating your blog layout. As long as you promise to be awesome, friendly, easy-going and not be offended if I run out of slots.
