Special Feature: What Loren Found in the Trash

I don’t know that I’ve exclusively said it here, but I am a ‘dumpster diver’. I’ve never climbed into an real dumpster but I have pulled LOADS of things out of other people’s trash, cleaned them up, and brought them into my home. Today I’m going to tell you about one of those things.

This painting was lying on my neighbor’s front lawn with some other obvious ‘art rejects’. I grabbed it quickly on a whim, because I think canvas art is almost always cool. And I didn’t want my neighbors to notice me going through my neighbors trash, because apparently I live in constant fear of what casual acquaintances  think, but will tell the entire internet about my ‘gross’ habits.

I know that it is a painting of someone else’s children but I think it’s pretty firmly in the class of ‘cool portrait art’, curly-haired-boy says that it is CREEPY.And now every time he passes by it he makes an over the top ‘surprised’ noise and yells about how weird they are.

So I threatened to paint over it so that only their eyes & smiles were left…

Or tell everyone that it was a portrait of us when we were kids. And when they asked why Kent is so much smaller than me I’ll say that I’m the blonde ones and he is the brunette.

So naturally to settle this argument I turned to the internet. Portrait of strangers’ children. Creepy? Awesome? Awesomely creepy? Creepily Awesome?

YOU TELL US!

You look good in short hair. :)

Actually, I like the painting and your salvaging it. Mementos are interesting even if about strangers. I collect postcards written a century ago by people I don’t know to people I don’t know. The cards are interesting in themselves.

In a hundred years, would you want someone looking through old entries in your blog and being amused by what they saw? I think that’d be cool.

Oh, and pedantic note: weird is spelled “ei”, not “ie”.

Haha…you are so funny Loren. And your BF’s response to the painting is equally funny. I must say this is a beautiful painting and the kids look really beautiful. At least they don’t look creepy…so i say it’s perfectly ok to keep it

Yes, if they were MY kids, it wouldn’t be weird at all. I think the painting is really nicely done.

Kind of hilarious – and only a little bit creepy :)

ALL CHILDREN ARE CREEPY TO ME!!!
Seriously though, I think since it’s a painting, it’s a little less creepy. But hey, when you paint over them like that, you can turn them into Annoying Oranges portraits instead :D

I’m pretty tempted to paint over them. I’m not sure with what though. I’ll consult Curly-haired-boy first and then report back ;)

HAHAHAHA. Loren. Please tell me you will definitely be painting over them and giving them cow bodies. or cat heads. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

    • http://www.theinclinedplane.com/ Loren Cline

Hmmm…. these are definitely interesting propositions… I will have to consult with the BF.

  • Virgnie

HUm… I hate to take sides, but I think the painting might be a little creepy. But we all have different tastes, right?! Maybe you could make it work :)

Ramiro would have said no to that painting too though…

    But I love you nonetheless!!

I think on a wall of portraits this piece could look really cool. But all by itself maybe not so much. Kent is probably a little TO supportive of my weird ‘getting things out of the trash’ habit.

Bahahaha thanks for giving me my first laugh of the evening- seriously when you just keep their eyes and mouth that is super creepy otherwise it’s pretty cool (unless said neighbours come to your house for dinner and wonder why a painting of their children is hanging in the house!)

The neighbor in question is an apartment building I’m guessing a tenant left them behind.

PS I am also totally guilty for being a garbage picker- my man wants nothing to do with it (especially after the whole bed bug outbreak, then I ceased for a while)

Ewww…. Louisville hasn’t had a big problem with bed bugs yet but I still check everything I pick up for signs of bugs in the crevasses & such.

Creepy or not I think it’s sad that someone threw it out in the first place! Surely if you had a gorgeous painting of your kids you’d keep it?!

I totally agree! It’s not like it’s a terrible painting or anything. Someone obviously spent a lot of time on it. I feel a little bad painting over it because these are someone’s KIDS.
