The Blanket Scarf

This scarf isn’t anything special, it’s a big yellow pashmina I bought at Old Navy (or was it Target?) for $12 a couple years ago. It’s 100% acrylic the little strands constantly come un-knotted. But it is enormous, and that is why it is my ‘blanket scarf’.

I don’t do a lot of traveling but the one traveling tip I have, take a ‘blanket scarf’. Layover in Chicago have to sleep on the floor in the airport? BAM, blanket scarf! Eight hour road trip to Dragon Con and you are trying to sleeping in the backseat of the car? BAM, blanket scarf! Guy next to you on the plane won’t turn down his little air nozzle thing? BAM blanket scarf! Hot date with your significant other during the summer, but you know the movie theater will be super cold? BAM! Blanket Scarf.

This scarf has been to Boston, Chicago, Columbus, LA and Atlanta with me. It went on my first date with Curly-haired-boy to see a midnight showing of Blade Runner (the best movie ever), it had been to countless other movies and plays with me because it goes with nearly all of my outfits. Overly air conditioned convention centers & movie theaters, outdoor events that start during the day and then get colder when the sun goes down. There are tons of places that I get cold and need an extra layer of warmth. Which I think more than anything just shows… that I have really poor circulation…

One of the Reasons I Style Blog

Outfits like this remind me exactly how self conscious I used to be. In high school I never would have walked out of the house in an outfit that showed any skin on my chest never mind a skirt that let you see that I have hips. Now you know my big secret, I was super uncomfortable with myself in high school.

In other news, after photographing this outfit I realized it probably wasn’t 100% work appropriate. It is kinda tight. Also the dress is so thin that it’s impossible to wear without leggings or tights underneath so it is constantly riding up, also it shrunk some in the wash and the length is a little awkward now. Sorry cute striped maxi dress, you are too see through & too short & kind of tight. This skirt puts only a thin layer of cotton between me and wearing LEGGINGS AS PANTS!

Edit 04.27.12 : Finally noticed that I misspelled ‘style’ in the title! Oh the humiliation! No one even pointed it out, probably because I wrote that I have mild dyslexia and now they all just feel sorry for me :(

Nearly Derby Time

I should probably be bored of this dress but instead I think I love it more every time I wear it.

You may (or may not) know that the Kentucky Derby is coming up. Much like a New Yorker who’s never seen the Statue of Liberty, I’ve never actually been to the Kentucky Derby. But it seems like I always see mint julep recipes pop up all over the internet this time of year.

Pro tip!

Mint juleps are kinda of gross.

If you are ever in Kentucky, or even decide to visit Louisville, you should just order bourbon instead, sans the mint & sugar. Bourbon is the ‘champagne’ of Kentucky, yes other places can make sparkling wine, or corn whiskey. But real champagne comes from Champagne & real bourbon comes from Bourbon County, Kentucky. I’d like to give you guys a delicious cocktail recipe that includes bourbon, but to be honest the only way I’ve ever drunk it is with a couple ice cubes, or some seltzer water in it. If that is to intense for you I’m pretty certain any bartender worth his salt will be gladly  suggest a bourbon cocktail that is NOT a mint julep.

I know expecting people across the world to know about a horse race is pushing it, but is your town known for something you don’t really care about?

A Quiet Lunch

Boots: Chinese Laundry (same), Jeans: Gap Always Skinny (same), Shirt: Levi’s, Jacket: Old Navy (similar ), Scarf, Gloves & Purse: Just Creations (similar tiny purse)

I was really excited yesterday to see lots of other people get that nagging urge to prove they are right. Even if you never tell the person you were arguing with you can tell ME, Loren, your blogger friend. I will gloat with you when you are correct about the name of that guy you knew in high school, or the price of the cookies you tried to buy at the grocery store, or that Cadbury eggs really are getting smaller.

Here’s another ‘Loren Emotion’, I’m not sure if I’m the only person who feels this way. So here it goes.

I love eating lunch by myself.

There, the true is out. Sure a lunch date with boyfriend is nice, or going out with the co-workers on pay day. But the average Monday-Thursday I’d rather be alone.

There’s no pressure to small talk while your mouth is full. No one makes weird comments about how your food is or isn’t healthy. You can put all your potato chips on your sandwich, or pick out all the onions, or dip your fries in your McFlurry without judgement. You can read without interruption. And, as a slow eater, there’s never any pressure to hurry up & finish because everyone else is done already.

I’ve run into people I know on my lunch outings and while they are always very nice the conversation goes a little like this:

Friend: So where’s Kent this afternoon?

Me: He’s working.

*Friend makes a very obvious pity face*

Friend: Oh… so… you are eating… by yourself?

Me: Yep! I’ve got my book I’m trying to finish and then I’m heading back to work.

Friend: Huh… Well… take care.

Dear friends & acquaintances. My solo lunches are awesome.

Another Day, Another Dress with a Belted Blazer on Top

Dress & Blazer: Thrifted, Belt & Shoes: Target, Scarf & Hat: Just Creations

I’ve accidentally on purpose worn very similar outfit every day for the past week or so, dress + belted blazer. It’s a combination of trying to wear all my cute dresses, and trying to stay warm. I pass all of my ‘fashion credit’ to Caitlin, who I think is the queen of the belted blazer.

A lot of internet ladies LOVE their cardigans. I’ve just never figured out how to wear them. I just think I look kind of strange in a cardigan. I think it’s because I have smallish shoulders, and a lot of stuff going on in the… you know… chest area. Believe me I am not complaining, I’m pretty much totally happy with my figure. However I think it throws off the proportions of certain items of clothing, like cardigans. I think the extra definition, and width that a blazer gives me is just more flattering on my figure. But maybe I am wrong and the one & only cardigan I own should have more friends in the closet.
