When in Doubt Wear Black Out

Dress: Dorothy Perkins, Shirt & Tights: Target, Weird arm placement: All Natural Baby

I changed my top 25 times before I left the house the other day. I had on a black tank top but couldn’t figure out what to wear over it to make this outfit look cute.

Then I remember DUH, I own 3 black t-shirts. I frequently forget that black is an option, I spent my formative teen years with a ‘goth’ older sister which really cemented in my psyche that I’m the ‘colorful one’. Also, I am still playing along with Mara’s ’30 Days of Dresses’, this is TOTALLY a dress, I folded down the top like a lot of bloggers do. I’ve never really tried that before but I really loved the look with this dress.

After work Curly-haired-boy, Ian-dog and I headed over to my mother’s house to watch Tin Tin, becuase I live two blocks from her, and sometimes go over for dinner & movie nights, because I am cool like that. The movie was ‘meh’, and my mother’s TV was so much smaller than ours. In our household the gender roles are frequently reversed, I am the one constantly pontificating we should upgrade our 42′ TV for one at least a foot larger, and Kent is the one that is rolling his eyes.

Maybe next time we will host movie night… THAT will prove him wrong.

Loren’s Karaoke List and Tips

Shirt: Old Navy, Jeans: Gap, Necklace: Ten Thousand Villages, Boots: Etsy

I’ve been wearing this EXACT outfit all over lately. Family gatherings, for pizza & beer with friends but most importantly for Karaoke.

My favorite bars, are small, friendly, have super skeezy bathrooms, a decent beer selection, local art on the walls, and most importantly… regular karaoke. There is something really magical about a karaoke bar. I think it depends on the type of bar you are in, what night of the week it is, and how many friends you have with you. But there is always the genuine feeling of ‘we’re all in this together’ even when someone is terrible.
There’s something really weird about how a local favorite song like Before He Cheats by Carrie Underwood (this is Kentucky ya’ll) can still go down in flames when performed by the wrong person. But that the right person can get the entire bar to sing Tie a Yellow Ribbon (which is an awesome song and I should probably include it in my repertoire).

So now I’d like to share with you a list of my Karaoke Favorites that are almost guaranteed to be a crowd pleaser.

  1. Be Our Guest – Beauty in the Beast (Nothing can make me stop singing this song. If unavailable feel free to replace with ANY Disney song that you are confident you know all the words too.)
  2. I’m Only Happy When it Rains – Garbage (I remember being 13 and really feeling this song.)
  3. Love Shack – B-52′s (Curly-haired-boy does not like this song. But he is wrong about things sometimes and it is an amazing song.)
  4. EITHER Shoop – Salt & Pepper OR The Bad Touch – The Bloodhound Gang (Doing both it stops being cheesy fun and starts getting super creepy)
  5. Leader of the Pack – The Shangri-la’s, (can be traded out for Buuild Me Up Buttercup – The Foundations if you need to)

Things to be avoided (even though I love them) pretty much any White Stripes songs, and the Safety Dance. There are just to many long pauses to be good Karaoke songs. Also do not perform a song ironically if you do not know all the words. (Hipster guys seem to think that Party in the U.S.A. is the funniest song, don’t mock my Miley though).

Unless you are double dog dared to perform a song ironically. And then you need to be sure that you COMMIT to singing Barbie Girl. Which is the song that 95% of double-dog-dares end up being.

Mostly remember to HAVE FUN and that, despite your internal monologue, everyone in the bar is just there to have fun and they WANT to enjoy your performance

Glasses?

I had a real outfit to show you guys but I’ve been thinking of getting some new glasses. And I need a little help. I ordered a some try-on pairs from Warby Parker. The first three pairs are kinda out due to sheer ridiculousness of size. The moral of this story is when Warby Parker says ‘These are meant for people with large faces’ they are serious. You probably won’t be able to ‘make it work’.

The comically larger Thatcher, this photo is a little blurry I know but it doesn’t even matter because they are SO large.

The slightly to large Huxley

The mostly ridiculous Owen

The very cute Zagg, except that I’m pretty sure I can’t get these because look how ADORABLE Curly-haired-boy is in them. And we are not yet at a the couple point of buying the same accessories.

My favorites the Webb, but which I probably shouldn’t buy because they aren’t terribly flattering. Any opinions? I may have to try another set of try-ons to see what other pairs look like. A few things that are slightly smaller ;)

Also please feel free to complement the beautiful necklace that Curky-haired-boy rocked out and got me for Christmas :) It’s from Ten Thousand Villages and I loves it.

An Excellent Example of How Blogging Has Affected my Wardrobe

Jacket: Target, Shirt: Old Navy, Pants: The Gap, Boots: Thrifted

I never DISLIKED horizontal stripes, they were just firmly in my mind as something ‘skinny girls’ should wear because they make you look wider than you are, my hips make themselves look wide enough without any help, thankyouverymuch. Also this shirt buttons up the back. Formerly I would have gone ‘WHY?’ and put it back on the shelf.

And Example of How Blogging Has NOT Affected my Wardrobe
This this is two sizes to big for me. I’ve a really bad habit of wearing things that are to big for me. Shirts I can usually get away with because over sized sweaters and floaty shirts are ‘in’ right now. Skirts that sit on my hips instead of at my waist like they are designed too? Still not fashionable. I’m still learning.

Ugh, I also for the first time saw my blog on IE 8. Which I didn’t realize I hadn’t done. So now I realize that I can’t read the requirements page for CSS3 correctly. Sorry 30% of internet users who haven’t upgraded yet. I’m working on it… now.
Also Patti has a ‘Visible Monday Link-up’ that I am joining :)

Blogger Crush – Joy of Fashion

I’ve been using Pinterest to pin outfits by my favorite bloggers that I can recreate. A couple weeks ago I pinned a look from Joy of Fashion with a bright yellow shirt and a white top.

Here is my version of Marie’s look.

Yellow Wrap Skirt: Cherry Bomb (local reseller) 12$, Striped Button Down: NY&C 13$, Shoes: Sears I think 15$, Necklace: Target 12$

Joy of Fashion is one of those blogs I’ve been reading forever but haven’t commented on a lot. I forget sometimes that other blogger ladies like reading comments as much as I do.  I love her style and all of her bright colors. Also her hair. Her hair is awesome.
